Hypnotherapy is not the same as hypnosis. Let me explain: hypnosis uses a deep trance where the subject (you) are in a state somewhere close to sleep. When you are in that state, the hypnotist is able to make suggestions you are not aware of, and you are likely to follow them. These suggestions can be many types such as reminders to have positive thoughts, or suggestions that you do something without being aware of why you are doing it. I do not practice hypnosis like that.
My style of hypnotherapy is to help you get into a much lighter trance, where you can focus inward, while you stay in full contact with yourself and me. You remain completely aware of what is going on, and what I am saying and doing. If I ever make a suggestion, you will know I am doing it and exactly what I am suggesting. I feel strongly that my purpose as a therapist is to create a safe and trusting relationship with you as my client, and even more importantly, to help you learn to trust yourself. In order to do that, I respect your ability to make good choices to express your own freedom. I believe it is unethical to intrude upon that freedom in any way. So, when providing hypnotherapy, I will offer no suggestions you are unaware of, nor hidden attempts to control your behavior.
If you receive hypnotherapy from me, you will learn how to beome very relaxed and focused at the same time, in a way that your thinking patterns, behavioral cues, and recollections beome much more clear to you. With my help, you then can find ways to change the patterns that keep you stuck.
The most common mode I use for hypnotherapy is to help you understand and resolve traumatic or difficult things that may have happened in your life, especially when you were young. My purpose is to help you to fully resolve the pain you have faced.
My hypnotherapy work can also treat anxiety and phobias such as fear of flying, bridges, dogs, spiders, etc. The list of potential phobias is long. I can also help you with pain and self-defeating behaviors.
I use hypnotherapy as an addition to the other thereapeutic tools I use to treat trauma, anxiety, depression, and addictions. So, you would not likely find me treating you with hypnotherapy each session. I have 30 years of experience providing many different treatments for all kinds of conditions. Hypnotherapy is one of them. It is a powerful tool that can help relieve your suffering. If you have any questions about what I have said here, just ask me.
