Compassionate Counseling Services to Strengthen Your Mental and Spiritual
Well-Being
Some Thoughts About My Work
I have nearly 40 years experience helping people to find themselves and discover peace in their lives. At this point I am often focused on supporting individuals in the second half of life who are seeking meaning in their lives. That may mean wanting to heal old wounds, resolving relationships with living or deceased parents, or finding a spiritual purpose they can live with in peace.
“My clients voice appreciation for my sense of humor, my sensitive response to their life circumstances, my many years of clinical and life experience that support my work, my respect for them, and my ability to effectively challenge them to grow.”
“I am especially interested in your coming to understand the roots of your behavior patterns so that you can change them to have more peace and happiness in your life. That can help you make clear decisions about what you want to do in your life without being unconsciously directed by your past.”
“I am experienced with many approaches to counseling. I am committed to finding just the right tools to use to address your unique situation and history.”
“Something powerful drew a couple together. I like to find out what that was, and, if it was lost in the struggle of daily life, how to recapture and reestablish it. Often a good place to start is to learn how to handle conflict without defensiveness or aggression.”
“Freedom comes when we are not dominated by ego or fear.”
“The most important factor in successful therapy is the creation of a safe, secure, and open relationship between client and therapist. That is why I spend so much energy making sure that you feel empowered and safe in our therapeutic relationship.”
“There can be huge benefit for us all if we can find a way to make peace with our families, as long as we are able to do that with integrity, honesty and safety.”
“Having compassion for yourself is not optional. The good news is that it can be learned.”
“I continue to offer online counseling sessions only. My clients appreciate the convenience of teletherapy, so I will continue that for now.”
“People often ask for help with feelings of anxiety or depression and what we usually end up talking about is their feeling haunted by a person or a time in their earlier life or their difficulty finding meaning and purpose in their current life.”
“Spirituality is the place where you feel a flow of vital energy and a connection with the mystery of life. That can be through nature, music, science, art, literature, community, creativity, family, or friends, or it can mean through God and/or a religious expression of faith. Often, it is a number of these together. I can help you find a path that sustains your spirit especially during these challenging times.”
About Larry
I earned a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Lewis and Clark College in Portland in 1987. I had worked for four years prior as a high school counselor. Before that I was a high school English teacher. I earned a Master's Degree in English from Marquette University in 1978. I majored in History in college.
I have worked in industry--both large and small companies, in retail, in nonprofits, and in health care. I have a special interest in helping families cope with a family business, as I grew up in one. My first teaching job was at a Yup'ik Eskimo high school in southwest Alaska.
I am licensed by the State of Oregon as a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have been in private practice since 1992. Prior to that I worked in Community Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, and Marriage and Family Counseling agencies.
For nearly 20 years, a portion of my energy has been focused on the political health of my profession. In 2009, I was a co-author of HB 2506, which was passed by the Oregon Legislature and signed into law by Governor Kulongoski. The bill was the culmination of 15 years of effort to require health insurance companies to recognize Licensed Professional Counselors and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists as essential core providers of mental health care in Oregon. Since then, I have been involved in writing and passing nine other mental health related bills into law. I am currently the Legislative Chair for the Oregon Mental Health Providers Political Action Committee.

Insurance
Services may be covered in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan.
If you wish to use insurance benefits, you may can call your insurance company and ask the following questions:
What is my out-of-network deductible and has it been met?
What is the coverage amount per therapy session for an out-of network provider?
Please note: I am not on any insurance provider panels. That means I have more freedom to provide counseling without interference from an insurance company. It also means you may have to pay more out-of-pocket costs to see me.
If you wish to use your out-of-network insurance benefit, I will give you a statement to send to your insurance company. Your insurer will then reimburse a portion of your payment to you, after your out-of-network deductible is met.

Good Faith Estimate
In compliance with the Federal No Surprise Act that went into effect January 1, 2022, all healthcare providers are required to notify clients of their Federal rights and protections against “surprise billing.” As an out-of-network provder I am required to do so. The Act requires that I notify you of your right to receive a notification when services are rendered by an out-of-network provider, if a client is uninsured, or if a client elects not to use their insurance.
Additionally, I am required to provide you with a Good Faith Estimate of the cost of services. It is difficult to determine the true length of treatment for mental health care, and each client has a right to decide how long they would like to participate in mental health care. Therefore, if you choose to begin treatment with me, I will generate a Good Faith Estimate of what it would cost you out-of-pocket to work with me for a year. Your treatment may not last a year. I will collaborate with you as we go on to determine how many sessions you may need.
The Good Faith Estimate I provide you may be reduced by any out-of-network reimbursements that, if you have an out-of-network benefit, can come to you from your insurer. If you choose to use out-of-network benefits for your care, I will issue you something called a superbill to send to your insurer each month.
Once I have generated a Good Faith Estimate for you, please keep it for your records. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
